Located in the north-western part of Augusta, Martinez, is a city in Columbia County of Georgia, US and is part of the Augusta Metropolitan area. The United States Census Bureau notes that the city covers 37.9 square kilometers. Its bordering cities are Augusta on the southeast and Evans on the north. Martinez is home to 35, 795 people. The population density of this city is 944.45 people per square kilometer. 

The city of Martinez is named after a wealthy plantation owner, Jose Martinez, whose name was pronounced like the traditional Spanish pronunciation. He was the first one to bring a plantation in the Columbia County. He had a dream to become an American soldier; however, he ended up having four daughters. The house of Jose, several other buildings, and a water tower are still situated in present-day Martinez.

The education in this city is served by Lakeside High School, Greenbrier High School, and Evans High School. The climate of Martinez is a sub-tropical one. It receives 45 inches of rain every year. The high in summers can go up to 92 degrees, whereas the lowest temperature in the winter months is 34.

Built in 1945, the Augusta Canal is situated in the city of Martinez. With the help of the head-gates, the water to the entire city is provided by the Savannah River. Augusta was also recognized in the south due to the many factories present here. You can find this canal’s history in the Columbia County Visitor Center.
