A city and county seat of McDuffie County, Thomson, falls within the scope of the Augusta-Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1837 as a depot. The city was originally named as Slashes. It was renamed in 1853 after John Edgar Thomson and was incorporated as a city in 1870. In honor of the thousands of camellia plants present in the city, its nickname is "The Camellia City of The South." 

It is a city which is home to many historical sites. One of the famous sites named as the Old Rock House is still present in present-day Thomson, built in 1785. It is said to be the home of the former president, Jimmy Carter.

Thomson is also considered as a division of the Central Savannah River Area. The city stretches over 5.1 square kilometers. The recent population census shows that this city is home to 6,778 people. Moreover, the population density is 1,329 people per square kilometer. Furthermore, the racial makeup of this city is 56.28% African Americans, 42.38% White, and the rest belong to other races.

The climate of Thomson is bearable. The high in the summer months can go up to 92 degrees, whereas, the lowest temperature in the winters is 31 degrees. The climate of this region is perfect. It becomes more entertaining during rain, as it receives 45 inches of rain, which is much higher as compared to other US cities. However, the snow is only 1 inches annually.

The education in this region is served by McDuffie County School District as all the schools come under them. For tourists, it is an amazing place as you can visit some of the famous landmarks. The best ones of them include The Rock House and Hickory Hill. The Rock House is the oldest stone residence in Georgia. Moreover, Hickory Hill is the residence of US Senator, Thomas E. Watson.
